Star Trek Events: Thursday, April 16th - Wednesday, April 22nd, 2020
by Alison Pitt

Events for the week starting Thursday, April 16th, 2020

In this week’s events, I’ve got a new thing or two, an old thing or two, and one thing that I just shouldn’t even have to tell you about.
First up, the new stuff!

Tonight, Thursday, April 16th, “The Doctors” are appearing on GalaxyCon Live.
That’s Gates McFadden, Robert Picardo and John Billingsley. The interview starts at 7pm ET on GalaxyCon Live’s Facebook page, at facebook.com/galaxyconlive.

EVRAH9XXYAAe13P.jpg
Also tonight is the first ever “Spirited: Cocktails with Kate in the Time of Coronavirus”. This special event is hosted by Captain Janeway herself, Kate Mulgrew, and gives 6 fans the opportunity to take part in a virtual Zoom happy hour. To enter, says Mulgrew on Twitter, “Please write no more than 3-4 sentences about how this period of enforced isolation has changed you, your life, and your perceptions of our society, and send your submissions to cocktailswithkate@gmail.com. Every week I will choose six of the best submissions and invite those people to a Zoom meeting, where we will pour a glass of wine (or your chosen spirit!) and have a nice chat. Perhaps some of my Trek friends will drop by and join us! You never know who may pop in.” Submissions for this week’s call are closed, but you can get in with a chance for next week; the deadline is noon on Tuesdays, eastern time.
I am pleased to announce an opportunity to connect during this unusual time - I’ve decided to host a virtual happy hour with six fans every Thursday from now until this global pandemic recedes and we can all be together again in person. How to enter as follows... pic.twitter.com/FxPDG7hu00

— Kate Mulgrew (@TheKateMulgrew) April 10, 2020
Next up, the old (but good!) stuff:
These are the Twitter watchalongs:
#allstartrek runs Sunday through Friday at 8/7C and follows the Heroes and Icons Channel’s All Star Trek programme.
#TOSSatNight starts at 9pm PT on Saturday night and follows a different episode of the Original Series every week, and
#StarTrekHour is a Q & A-format event, every Tuesday at 1pm PT.

And don’t forget the LeVar Burton Reads Twitter Livestreams:
Mondays for kids at 9am PT
Wednesdays for young adults at 3pm PT, and
Fridays for adults at 6pm PT.

And last, but not least, the one I shouldn’t even have to tell you about:
Go play Star Trek Online. On PC or console, it’s one of the best ways out there to connect with fellow Trekkies. You don’t have to be a huge gamer, or know all the lore. You just have to enjoy hanging out in Star Trek. Find out more at startrekonline.com.

Gates McFadden weighs in on Star Trek: Picard and the future of conventions
by Alison Pitt
galaxycon-live-star-trek-doctors.png
Gates McFadden and Robert Picardo appear on GalaxyCon Live

Former Star Trek doctor Gates McFadden has weighed in on Star Trek: Picard, and what she thinks will become of conventions, in the time of coronavirus.
McFadden was a guest on GalaxyCon Live last week, along with other former Starfleet doctors Robert Picardo and John Billingsley.
TrekMovie.com reports that the conversation covered the actors’ reactions to Star Trek: Picard, as well as their reactions to fan reactions.

McFadden said she understands some fans’ hesitation to accept Picard, but that she nonetheless thinks fans should keep an open mind. “There is a whole group of people for whom it is not familiar, yet,” she said. “So, they are sort of holding on to something they really feel comfortable with. [...] I encourage fans to stay open to things...I think give it another year and everyone will have come around.”

Regarding Picard, McFadden also acknowledged that it was a different type of show to Star Trek: The Next Generation.
“It’s really like a major film, it is so beautifully done,” she said. “I think the script and the storylines are wonderfully different than what we on Next Gen had, but we were on in a time when people were watching one channel on their television sets and it wasn’t like it is with Netflix and a whole different medium now.
I think it makes sense to have a story that keeps evolving. It’s absolutely the way to go.”

Later in the interview, talk turned to conventions, most of which have been cancelled for this year, including San Diego Comic Con.
Picardo commented that the cast and fans of Star Trek: Voyager will be particularly affected by cancellations. He said, “This year was going to be a very busy year because it’s Voyager’s 25th anniversary, so there were plans to go everywhere in the world. Now that the world has been changed, all of that has been wiped off the slate.”
He spoke directly to fans, noting that it will be some time before he’s able to interact with them in person.

McFadden tried to frame the cancellations and quarantine in a positive light, though, saying, “I think it is a time where we have to reflect about how we can [reach out to fans].
And maybe it is great to rethink how conventions will be. Why not? Let’s be positive. There must be ways we can do cool things.”

You can watch the full video interview for yourself on GalaxyCon Live’s Facebook page, at facebook.com/galaxyconlive.

Garrett Wang and Robert Duncan McNeill are starting a new Star Trek: Voyager rewatch podcast, The Delta Flyers
by Alison Pitt
star-trek-voyager-delta-flyers-wang-mcneill.png
Garrett Wang and Robert Duncan McNeill as Harry Kim and Tom Paris in Star Trek: Voyager

There’s a new Star Trek podcast in town, and if you’re feeling saddened by the lack of conventions during this, the 25th anniversary of Star Trek: Voyager, then this one might just be for you.

Voyager alumni Garrett Wang and Robert Duncan McNeill have just announced that they will shortly be starting a new Voyager rewatch show, called The Delta Flyers.

TrekCore.com reports that the series is set to launch in May and will cover all 167 episodes across Voyager’s seven seasons, starting with the series premiere, “Caretaker”.

We are excited to announce that the first episode of our podcast will be available in early May! #StarTrek #Voyager #StarTrekVoyager #TomParis #HarryKim #TheDeltaFlyers
— The Delta Flyers (@TheDeltaFlyers) April 17, 2020

But it’s not just the podcast that Wang and McNeill are creating; according to the Patreon page for the show, they’re also offering bonus content at different paid tiers.
That’ll include behind-the-scenes video, merchandise discounts, and even a monthly video of McNeill showing off his bartending skills (no joke).
The top tier of $150 a month will get you an hour-long monthly Zoom call, to talk about whatever you feel like.

Now, a couple of disclaimers: The Delta Flyers is not a part of the Roddenberry Podcast Network, and it also should not be confused with Delta Flyer, itself not on the Roddenberry Podcast Network but nonetheless a fun Voyager rewatch show hosted by Trekkies Thad and Stuart.

That said, there is always room for another great Star Trek podcast, so please join me in welcoming Wang and McNeill to the fray.

If you’d like to keep up to date with how The Delta Flyers are coming along, and be among the first to know when the first episode drops, just follow @TheDeltaFlyers on Twitter.

In-House Con Star Trek: Discovery panel - Saturday, May 9th
We’ve got a couple of big events happening this weekend, and the first comes courtesy of In-House Con. In-House Con is a virtual convention event featuring different themed panels each weekend in May, and this Saturday’s event features members of the cast of Star Trek: Discovery. The event starts at 12 noon PT.

For a virtual “door charge” of $4.99, you can watch the online panel of Doug Jones (aka Saru), Patrick Kwok-Choon (aka Lt. Rhys), Raven Dauda (aka Dr. Pollard) and Hannah Cheesman (aka Lt. Airiam, pt. 2). There are other specialized packages available, including breakout video chat sessions, autographs, and even passes that will get you into all the other In-House Con panels in May (although they’re not Star Trek, so why would you even bother?).

For more information, including how to purchase tickets and how to watch the panel, visit InHouse-Con.com.

Creation Entertainment presents Chase Masterson - Saturday, May 9th
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine’s Chase Masterson will be appearing in another of Creation Entertainment’s Virtual Fan Events, similar to the one they put on last week with Voyager’s Robert Duncan McNeill and Garrett Wang. You can join in this Saturday, May 9th at 10:00 AM PT.
This is a ticketed event, on a “pay what you can” basis. Those wishing to attend can visit Stageit.com or Creation Entertainment’s website for more information.

Sir Patrick Stewart auctions a Shakespeare lesson - Friday, May 1st to Friday, May 8th
Also, just a reminder that the Sotheby’s auction in which you can bid for a Shakespearean acting class with Sir Patrick Stewart is still going on.
The MayDay COVID-19 Charity Auction runs through this Friday, May 8th. But hurry...and bring your pocketbook!
The high bid on Stewart’s acting class is currently sitting at a formidable $9,000. Find out more at sothebys.com.

The regular stuff
And finally, the “regular” stuff.

Now, since we are all apparently getting used to this whole “social distancing thing”, there are actually a whole bunch of recurring events that are going on from week to week.
So many, in fact, that’s it’s getting a little unwieldy to list on the show.

So from today, what I’ll do is pick out a few to highlight, and urge you to check out the website or social media for the rest of the listings.
And of course, if you’ve got a new event just starting up, please let me know! I’d like to give it a boost.

Okay, so first up, the Twitter watchalongs:
#allstartrek runs Sunday through Friday at 8/7C and follows the Heroes and Icons Channel’s All Star Trek programme.
#TOSSatNight starts at 9pm PT on Saturday night and follows a different episode of The Original Series every week, and
#StarTrekHour is a Q & A-format event, every Tuesday at 1pm PT.

And finally, a new entry from last week, the Star Trek: Netflix Party, hosted daily and coordinated on Facebook.
Every evening, they use the Netflix Party Chrome extension to watch Star Trek together. To find out more, head over to Star Trek: Netflix Party on Facebook.

Once again, if you have a virtual Star Trek event you’d like for me to promote, then just let me know.
Email me at info@dailystartreknews.com. Or use the hashtag #dstnevents on Twitter.
Let me know what you’re doing to keep the fandom alive, even as we’re all mostly staying in.

Star Trek’s Q, John de Lancie, narrates prog rock on new special edition album from Ayreon
by Alison Pitt

John de Lancie appears on Ayreon’s “Electric Castle Live and Other Tales”

Are you a fan of John de Lancie? Are you a fan of prog rock?
Admittedly, the subset of people who fall into both those categories might be pretty niche, but whether you’re already a fan, or perhaps are prog rock-curious, then there’s a new and also old album that you’ll definitely want to check out.

Prog rock band/guy Ayreon recently released a deluxe 5-Disc photobook version of their album “Into the Electric Castle”.
Or more accurately, it’s an album of 2019’s live performance of 1998’s “Into the Electric Castle”.
According to the Amazon Editorial Review for the album, “Ayreon - Electric Castle Live and Other Tales” was recorded over four nights in Tilburg in The Netherlands, and features the original album singers and musicians, special guests, and live narration by Q himself, John de Lancie.

Amazon says of the album, “‘Into The Electric Castle’ is a classic tale of an epic quest. Set in ‘no time and no space’, it tells the story of eight individuals who are guided by a mysterious voice and tasked with finding the mysterious Electric Castle and discover what's inside.”

“Electric Castle Live and Other Tales” contains not only the entire concert recording, including de Lancie’s narration, but it also includes nearly 3 hours of bonus material (including a “making of” documentary), and a 44-page book with photos and liner notes.

You can get this special-edition album from Amazon.com, or from a number of other retailers; it’s also available on multiple streaming services.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Game of Thrones actor Alexander Siddig entertains fans in Sid City Social Club online chats
by Aaron Coker
siddig-sid-city-social-club.png
Alexander Siddig chats to fans on Sid City Social Club

Alexander Siddig is known to audiences for playing Julian Bashir on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, and for his roles on Game of Thrones, Gotham, and in the films Syriana and Kingdom of Heaven.

Like many of us, he’s been stuck indoors due to the COVID-19 outbreak, unable to work or make appearances.
To combat that isolation, he’s started a series of weekly online gatherings with his official fan club, Sid City, called the Sid City Social Club, giving fans an opportunity to interact with himself and each other. Meetings of the Club take place on Zoom and Siddig uses the time to chat with fans, answer their questions, listen to their personal anecdotes, and share his own experiences dealing with life in quarantine.

And Siddig isn’t the only Trek star who’s a club member; attendees were treated to a special surprise last week when Garak actor Andrew Robinson unexpectedly joined the stream to chat with both Siddig and fans.

The #SidCitySocialClub meets *twice* this week. Mark your calendars and join us for one of them to chat with Alexander Siddig and other fans from around the world!

Details at https://t.co/liZUcySFSL pic.twitter.com/9HX0EGW1Ei
— Sid City (@sidcityonline) May 10, 2020
If you want to join the Sid City Social Club, you can! Just head to SidCity.net. The next live Zoom is tonight, Tuesday, May 12th at 9pm ET and will run for two hours, but be aware that there’s a few rules to participating.

There are more details on the site.

Of course, if you can’t make the stream or aren’t able to get in due to the number of participants, you can catch highlights of each session on the Sid City YouTube page.
And if you want to keep up with details about future meetings, they’re updated weekly on the Sid City website and announced on Twitter and Facebook.

Rod Roddenberry and Adam Nimoy, “The Sons of Star Trek”

In and among all the various livestreams from Star Trek celebrities that have been going on for the past few weeks, there’s one coming up tomorrow that you definitely don’t want to miss.
Roddenberry Entertainment is hosting a viewing party for Trek Nation, the 2011 documentary looking at the positive impact that Star Trek has had on people’s lives, as seen through the eyes of Gene Roddenberry’s son, Rod. Rod Roddenberry, along with fellow Trek offspring Adam Nimoy will offer up commentary on the documentary as they watch along with fans.

WATCH Trek Nation w The Sons Of #StarTrek!

Join Rod Roddenberry and Adam Nimoy for a LIVE viewing party featuring the documentary Trek Nation. 🖖 We'll all press play together!

When: Friday, May 29th | 6pm (PDT)
Where: Roddenberry FB Page ➡️ https://t.co/7kibO1nVgc#roddenberry pic.twitter.com/OgaSBGFRjc
— RODDENBERRY (@roddenberry) May 22, 2020

Trek Nation was originally conceived as a way for Rod Roddenberry to connect with his late father. But the end result is a documentary that saw Rod trekking across America and learning about the legacy of Star Trek through conversations with the actors who made it happen, plus fans, friends, and others. The Trek Nation website says that it’s “a journey to understand one of the world’s largest cultural phenomenons, the man behind it, and the legacy he’s left us all.”

The watchalong starts at 6pm PT on Friday, May 29th, at facebook.com/roddenberry. You’ll need to have the movie queued up, and Rod and Adam will tell you when to press play. Trek Nation is available for streaming on CuriosityStream, or you can rent or buy it from Amazon or iTunes. Come and enjoy Trek Nation with “The Sons of Star Trek”, Friday at 6pm PT, on Facebook.
